The park “La Lizza”, takes it’s name from the term “Cavallerizza”, meaning the place where knights trained. It is a large open space in front of the Medici Fortress, first designed in 1778 by Antonio Matteucci in collaboration with the famous gardener Leopoldo Prucker. Its current look dates back to 1872 when it was reshaped by Pietro Marchetti. In the middle of the park you will find an equestrian monument figuring Giuseppe Garibaldi, sculpted by Raffaello Romanelli, and a bronze sculpture entitled ‘Horse and its foal’ by Sandro Chia (1994). As a backdrop to the park, there are several buildings and palaces, among them stands out the “Asilo Monumento’’ (nursery school), built by Vittorio Mariani with a colonnade of ionic columns, in memory of the Sienese who died in the First World War and inaugurated on the 28 September 1924 in the presence of the King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoia.
